Maryland Introduces Free IRS Direct File Tax Tool for 2025 Season

Governor Wes Moore announced that Maryland will participate in the IRS Direct File online tool for the 2025 tax season, allowing over 700,000 Marylanders to file their taxes electronically for free. This initiative, supported by the Biden-Harris administration and made possible through the Inflation Reduction Act, is designed to simplify the tax filing process and save taxpayers time and money. U.S. Treasury officials, alongside Maryland lawmakers, emphasized that the Direct File program will help ensure that Marylanders receive the tax benefits they are owed while avoiding costly tax preparation fees.

The IRS successfully piloted Direct File in 12 states during the 2024 tax season, with over 140,000 Americans filing returns and claiming $90 million in refunds, saving $5.6 million in tax prep fees. Maryland will also partner with civic technology firm Code for America to offer free state tax filing through its FileYourStateTaxes tool. With this partnership, Maryland aims to create one of the most transparent, efficient, and modern tax systems in the nation, providing significant relief for working families across the state.
