Unscheduled Mosquito Control Spraying for Bowie on August 15

The Maryland Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Prince George’s County Health Department, is expanding mosquito control services in response to public health concerns about mosquito-borne diseases. On the evening of Thursday, August 15, 2024, Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) truck-based spraying will be conducted in the City of Bowie, specifically in areas north of US Route 50. Spraying will begin after 7:30 p.m., with a backup date scheduled in case of inclement weather.

During this time, any existing spray exemptions in the area will be temporarily lifted. The spraying will use a permethrin-based solution, approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public health use. While the solution is considered safe, residents are advised to stay indoors during spraying as a precaution.

To further reduce the risk of mosquito bites, residents are encouraged to wear protective clothing, use insect repellent, and remove standing water around their homes.

Bowie Gymnasium Taking a Timeout: Five Fun Ways to Stay Active While the Gym is Temporarily Closed

Your favorite spot for a pick-up game, fitness class, or just an all-around good sweat session—the Bowie Gymnasium—will be taking a well-deserved break starting August 18. But don’t worry; it’s all for a great cause. For the next five weeks, the gym will undergo a top-to-bottom makeover, including deep sanding of the courts, fresh coats of paint on both the floors and walls, adding pickleball lines and those essential routine repairs that keep the place in peak condition.

Mark your calendars, because if all goes according to plan, the doors will reopen on September 23, revealing a space that’s brighter, better, and ready for action!

Five Fun Ways to Stay Active While the Gym is Closed

Now, we know that a month without the gym might sound daunting, but this is the perfect opportunity to mix things up and explore the many other fun activities Bowie has to offer. Here’s a list of five exciting alternatives to keep your body moving and your spirits high until the gym is back in action:

1. Explore the Trails at Governor Bridge Natural Area

Just a short drive from the gym, Governor Bridge Natural Area offers serene trails perfect for a morning jog, a leisurely walk, or even a bird-watching expedition. With the leaves starting to change color, it’s the ideal time to soak in the beauty of Bowie’s natural landscape.

2. Catch a Game at Prince George’s Stadium

Missing the competitive vibe? Head over to Prince George’s Stadium to catch the Bowie Baysox in action! Enjoy America’s favorite pastime with friends and family, complete with hotdogs, popcorn, and that unbeatable ballpark atmosphere.

3. Join a Class at Bowie Community Center

Don’t let the gym closure stop your fitness routine. The Bowie Community Center offers a variety of fitness classes, from high-energy aerobics to calming yoga sessions. There’s something for everyone, so why not try something new and keep those endorphins flowing?

4. Skate Around at the Bowie Ice Arena

Cool off and glide into some fun at the Bowie Ice Arena. Whether you’re an experienced skater or just looking to enjoy a few laps around the rink, this is a fantastic way to stay active while having a blast on the ice.

5. Get Some Steps in at Allen Pond Park

Gather your crew and head over to the Allen Pond Park. It’s a great way to engage in some friendly competition on the basketball courts, ball fields or walking and biking trails.

Countdown to Reopening

While we’ll all miss the Bowie Gymnasium for a few weeks, these alternatives will ensure that you stay fit, active, and entertained. Plus, when the gym reopens, you’ll be greeted with a space that’s been revitalized from top to bottom—perfect for jumping right back into your favorite activities.

So, make the most of this time, try something new, and get ready to hit the ground running on September 23. The newly revamped Bowie Gymnasium will be waiting for you!
