Bowie’s Hidden Gem: Radio & TV Museum Marks 25th Anniversary

The National Capital Radio & Television Museum in Bowie is celebrating 25 years this weekend. Nestled in a historic 1906 building, this small yet significant museum highlights the evolution of broadcast technology, from early radio communication to modern-day advancements. Visitors can explore exhibits like the FADA Model 42-Z, a pre-Great Depression console, and experience the manual sound effects that were once created live on air in the 1920s.

Run largely by local volunteers, the museum also benefits from the expertise of its only full-time staff member, Executive Director Mark Sledziewski. He estimates the museum's collection includes around 70,000 items, including radios, manuals, and advertisements. Founded by the Mid-Atlantic Antique Radio Club, the museum opened its doors in 1999.

To mark its anniversary, the museum will offer free admission, a new exhibit, and a celebratory event on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Regular admission is $7.

PGCPS Implements New School Start Times to Address Bus Delays

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is standardizing start and end times for the upcoming school year to address bus delays and improve scheduling. Students will now start their school day at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., or 9:30 a.m., depending on the school. The change affects 78% of elementary, middle, and high schools, with most experiencing a shift of 15 minutes or less.

These adjustments are part of a broader effort to enhance bus transportation, addressing the national shortage of drivers that has impacted the county. PGCPS is also relocating and eliminating some bus stops, ending service for students within a safe walking distance, and introducing a tracking system for parents. While some parents are concerned about the new schedules, officials believe the changes will ultimately improve efficiency.

The Bowie Skate Park is a 10,000-square-foot concrete haven for skateboarders and inline skaters of all skill levels. Whether you're a street skater or a vert enthusiast, this well-lit park offers plenty of challenges. The street course includes exciting features like rolled banks, pump bumps, kinked rails, steps, quarter-pipes, and a unique snake run that connects the bowl deck to the street course. For those who love vert skating, the bowl ranges in depth from 4 to 9 feet and includes an over-vertical cradle designed to test even the most advanced skaters.

While the park is a blast, it's also a skate-at-your-own-risk facility with no on-site staff. All skaters must adhere to the posted rules, and parents are responsible for deciding if the park is suitable for their children. Spectator seating is available, but visitors should stay alert for skaters and runaway boards. Bicycles and scooters are not permitted.
