Explore Career Opportunities: Bowie PD Recruiting Dinner on July 31

The Bowie Police Department is hosting an Open House Recruiting Dinner on July 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. for experienced law enforcement officers. Attendees will have the chance to meet Chief Preston and the Command Staff, and learn about the opportunities available within the department. To attend, please RSVP by July 29 to [email protected]. For those unable to join in person, a virtual option is available. This event is a great opportunity to explore a career with the Bowie Police Department.

Drive Safe: Maryland's Weekend Speed Enforcement Campaign Kicks Off

This weekend, the Maryland Department of Transportation is spearheading High Visibility Enforcement to promote safe driving. Over 45 law enforcement agencies, including all State Police Barracks, will intensify speed enforcement to decrease accidents and enhance safety across the state. Marylanders are urged to drive slowly to avoid citations and prevent life-threatening crashes.

Maryland's Motor Vehicle Administrator, Chrissy Nizer, emphasized the importance of allowing ample time for travel and reducing speed to ensure safety. Excessive speeding, a major factor in over one-third of fatal crashes, significantly increases the risk of severe injuries or death.

The enforcement effort is in collaboration with the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and will see participation from local agencies such as Frederick, Mount Airy, and Hagerstown Police Departments, and the Carroll and Washington County Sheriff’s Offices. Funding for this initiative is provided by the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office.

McMillan-Stewart Foundation Donates $300,000 to Bowie State for Elijah Cummings Scholarship

The McMillan-Stewart Foundation has donated $300,000 to Bowie State University to establish a scholarship in honor of the late Congressman Elijah Cummings. This scholarship will support students facing financial barriers, aiding them in completing their degrees and reducing debt. The foundation, founded in 2001 by Genevieve McMillan, focuses on eliminating racism and fostering African American youth leadership. Eligible BSU undergraduates with a minimum 2.5 GPA who have completed the FAFSA can apply for the scholarship.
