Quote of the Day
“Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier." — Colin Powell

Support Local Farms and Clean Waters with Maryland’s New License Plates
Maryland drivers now have a fresh way to showcase their support for local agriculture and the Chesapeake Bay with the introduction of new specialty license plates. The Agricultural plate, adorned with vibrant imagery of Maryland’s rich farming heritage, highlights the state’s commitment to supporting local farmers and sustainable agriculture. Meanwhile, the Chesapeake Bay plate, featuring serene bay landscapes, underscores efforts to protect and preserve this vital waterway.
These plates not only add flair to vehicles but also contribute to important causes. Proceeds from the Agricultural plates support educational programs and initiatives for young farmers. Funds from the Chesapeake Bay plates aid in bay restoration projects, promoting cleaner water and healthier ecosystems. Embrace Maryland pride and make a difference with these distinctive new plates.
Prince George's County Council At-Large Special Election
The Prince George’s County Board of Elections is holding a Special Election to fill a vacant At-Large County Council seat. The Special Primary Election is set for August 6, 2024, with ballots mailed in late July to all eligible voters, including a prepaid return envelope. The General Election will coincide with the Presidential Election on November 5, 2024.
To participate, voters must be registered by July 16, 2024. Registrations and updates can be made online or in person.
Mail-in ballots for the Primary Election must be returned by 8 pm on August 6, 2024. Voters can also use ballot drop boxes until 8 pm on election days or vote in person from July 31 to August 6, 2024.

DMV Girls Try Hockey for Free Day Returns This September

Registration is now open for the second annual DMV Girls Try Hockey for Free Day, scheduled for Saturday, September 14, at 18 rinks across Maryland and Virginia. This event is a collaborative effort by the Washington Capitals, Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation, the Potomac Valley Amateur Hockey Association (PVAHA), and various youth hockey organizations to introduce girls aged 4-9 to hockey at no cost.
The Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation has donated $34,373 to support this initiative. The program provides a one-to-two-hour ice session where all necessary equipment is loaned to participants by local youth hockey organizations.
Participating clubs in Virginia include Caps Academy, Hampton Roads Junior Admirals, Loudoun Knights, Piedmont Predators, Potomac Lady Patriots, Reston Raiders, Richmond Generals, and The St. James. Maryland participants include Bowie Bruins at Bowie Ice Arena, Frederick Freeze, Hagerstown Bulldogs, Howard Huskies, Montgomery Youth Hockey Association, Navy Youth Hockey, Southern Maryland Sabres, Tomorrow’s Ice, Tri City Eagles, and Tucker Road Ducks.
In addition, some rinks will host an all-girls Future Caps Learn to Play session in the weeks following the event to encourage continued participation. For more information and to register, visit Caps Youth Hockey.
Last year, over 300 girls participated, with more than 30% continuing to play. Girls' participation in the NHL Future Caps Learn to Play Program also saw a significant increase.
