Quote of the Day

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” — Leo Buscaglia

Stay Safe During Extreme Heat in Prince George’s County

Prince George's County, Maryland, is experiencing extreme heat, prompting health and safety concerns. High temperatures and humidity levels pose significant risks, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Residents are advised to take the following precautions to stay safe during this period:

1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, avoiding sugary and alcoholic beverages, which can lead to dehydration.

2. Limit Outdoor Activities: Reduce outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

3. Wear Appropriate Clothing: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to help your body stay cool. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection.

4. Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin, reapplying every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

5. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure that children, the elderly, and pets are safe and not exposed to excessive heat. Never leave them in parked cars, even for a short time.

By following these precautions, residents can minimize the health risks associated with extreme heat and stay safe during the hot weather.
