Summer Swimming Safety

From the backyard pools to community pools in Bowie; safety while swimming comes must take priority. For safe swimming in Bowie, MD, always opt for areas with lifeguards on duty. Wearing a life jacket in open water is highly recommended, and it's essential to swim with a buddy to ensure safety. Parents and guardians should supervise children at all times, as lifeguards are not responsible for babysitting. Avoid alcohol when swimming, as it impairs judgment and increases the risk of drowning. Be cautious of natural hazards such as currents, sudden depth changes, and slippery surfaces near the water. Following posted signs regarding water conditions and swimming restrictions is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Five Summer Swimming Tips:

1. Swim Near Lifeguards: Always choose swimming areas where lifeguards are present.

2. Wear Life Jackets: Use life jackets in open water, especially for children and weak swimmers.

3. Supervise Children: Keep a close watch on children at all times.

4. Avoid Alcohol: Do not swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

5. Follow Safety Signs: Adhere to posted signs about water conditions and swimming rules.

Maryland DNR's Guide to Safe Swimming and Boating This Summer

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources urges everyone to follow safe swimming practices this summer. Always swim near a lifeguard, wear a life jacket, and avoid swimming or boating while under the influence. Drownings are more likely in unguarded areas, such as the site of a recent tragedy in Patapsco Valley State Park. The Maryland Park Service operates guarded beaches at several parks, including Assateague Island and Deep Creek Lake, though staffing shortages may affect availability. Parents should supervise children closely, as lifeguards are not babysitters. Open water poses unique hazards like currents, sudden depth changes, and poor visibility. To enhance safety, always swim with a buddy, avoid alcohol, and use life jackets, which are available for loan at various locations.
