A crowded field of candidates is vying for the vacant at-large seat on the Prince George’s County Council, with 13 contenders—nine Democrats and four Republicans—filing their candidacies. The Democratic lineup includes County Council Chair Jolene Ivey, state Del. Marvin E. Holmes Jr., former Del. Angela M. Angel, and Bowie Mayor Tim Adams, among others. The Republican candidates are Kamita Gray, Michael Riker, Isaac Toyos, and Jonathan White. The special primary election is set for August 6, with early voting from July 31 to August 5. The seat was vacated by Mel Franklin, who resigned amidst charges of campaign theft. The election winner will serve the remainder of Franklin's term.

Community activist Belinda Queen noted the possibility of another special election if Ivey wins, as her current council seat would need filling. Ivey’s campaign has begun distributing materials showcasing her achievements and endorsements. Other prominent candidates include Holmes, Adams, Davis Brown, and Angel, each with significant political backgrounds and local influence.

July is National Grilling Month

July is National Grilling Month, a time to celebrate outdoor cooking and savor delicious barbecued meals with family and friends. As grilling becomes a favorite summer activity, it's essential to prioritize safety to ensure enjoyable and hazard-free cookouts.

1. Keep the Grill Clean: Regularly clean the grill to prevent grease buildup, which can cause flare-ups.

2. Maintain Distance: Place the grill at least 10 feet away from any structures, including your house, deck railings, and overhanging branches.

3. Check for Gas Leaks: Before using a gas grill, inspect the hose for leaks by applying a soap and water solution and looking for bubbles.

4. Supervise the Grill: Never leave the grill unattended while in use.

5. Keep a Fire Extinguisher Nearby: Be prepared for emergencies by having a fire extinguisher within reach.

Celebrate National Grilling Month with delicious food and safe grilling practices!
