Maryland Enacts New Laws: Fee Hikes and Safety Measures

Several new laws will take effect in Maryland on Monday, introducing various fee increases.

Key Changes:

1. Vehicle Registration Fees: Annual fees for passenger cars will be $110.50, and biennial fees will be $221, marking a 60% increase. This increase will fund the Transportation Trust Fund and Maryland Trauma Centers.

2. Electric Vehicle Surcharge: Owners will now pay a $250 biennial fee to offset the lack of gas tax payments.

3. Tobacco and Vaping Taxes:

- Cigarettes: $5 per pack (up by $1.25).

- Other tobacco products: 60% of the wholesale price (up by 7%).

- Electronic smoking devices: 20% sales tax (up by 8%).

4. Indoor Vaping Ban: Vaping is now banned in public places, transportation, and workplaces.

5. ENOUGH Act: Gov. Wes Moore's initiative to combat child poverty.

6. Active Shooter Drills: Restrictions on potentially traumatic activities and mandatory parental notifications.

7. Ankle Monitoring Study: A workgroup will study the costs and availability of pretrial home detention monitoring.

8. Alcohol Delivery: New permits for local delivery services of alcoholic beverages.

9. Pava LaPere Grant: Grants for tech startups founded by students.

Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these changes.

Bowie State Celebrates 1988 Football Team’s Hall of Fame Induction

Salisbury University head football coach Sherman Wood has been inducted into the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame as part of the 1988 Bulldog football team. The induction ceremony took place on Saturday at the BWI Marriott Hotel in Linthicum Heights, Md. Wood was the lone graduate assistant on head coach Dave Dolch’s staff, coaching defensive backs and serving as special teams coordinator. The 1988 Bulldogs had an impressive season, finishing with a 9-2-1 overall record and a 4-1-1 record in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. Their performance earned them a spot in the NCAA Division II Football Championship tournament, cementing their legacy in Bowie State’s athletic history.

Stay Safe: Bowie Sees Uptick in Armed Bank Robberies

The number of bank customers targeted by armed robbers in Maryland is increasing, with WUSA9 reporting several bank jugging incidents. Bank jugging involves robbers following people who leave the bank or ATM. Bowie Police are investigating two new armed robberies from Wednesday afternoon. The first occurred just after midnight at a Truist Bank on Laurel-Bowie Road, and the second happened at 11:30 a.m. at a TD Bank on Collington Road.

Residents are on high alert. "It's really scary," said Joyce Newberne-Phillips, a TD Bank customer. Stacia Wright, another Bowie resident, shared similar concerns, stating, "It makes me not feel very safe."

Bowie Police have noted an uptick in such incidents and offer the following safety tips:

Five Tips for ATM Safety:

1. Be Aware of Surroundings: Stay alert outside of the bank.

2. Store Cash Discreetly: Put money in your purse or wallet immediately.

3. Vary Your Routine: Change your habits to avoid being predictable.

4. Secure Your Vehicle: Lock doors, close windows, and hide valuables.

5. Report Suspicious Activity: Contact the police if you notice anything unusual.

No arrests have been made in connection with these robberies. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police.
