Six Flags Bowie to Light Up the Sky with Independence Day Fireworks

Six Flags America in Bowie is set to host a spectacular fireworks display on July 4th. Guests can enjoy a full day of thrilling rides, live music, and festive food before the fireworks. The park's family-friendly environment ensures a fun and safe celebration for all ages. Six Flags encourages visitors to arrive early to take advantage of the attractions and secure a good viewing spot for the fireworks finale, making it a memorable holiday experience.'

Debate Intensifies: Should Parents Face Fines for School Absences?

The debate over fining parents for student absenteeism is heating up as the issue continues to impact U.S. education. A study by the American Enterprise Institute found 26% of public school students were chronically absent last year, up from 15% pre-pandemic. Chronic absenteeism, missing 10% of the school year, disrupts learning for all students.

A Test Prep Insight survey of 3,000 parents revealed mixed opinions: 38% of Maryland parents support fines, averaging $22 daily, to deter absenteeism. However, 44% oppose fines, worried about fairness to low-income families. Many prefer support for struggling students or financial incentives for attendance.

Mental health struggles are a major factor, with 73% of Maryland parents supporting mental health days. Suggested supports include catch-up sessions and counselor check-ins. The debate continues, focusing on balancing accountability and support to address absenteeism effectively.

Improvements for Attendance in Prince George’s County Schools

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) report significant improvements, with student suspensions and chronic absenteeism both down compared to January 2023. Out-of-school suspensions dropped 31.6%, reflecting the district’s emphasis on social-emotional support and progressive discipline. Chronic absenteeism decreased from 34.89% in January 2023 to 29.10% in January 2024, the lowest in three years. This improvement is attributed to enhanced school communication, parent notifications, central office support, and staff training, benefiting schools like Baden and James Gholson Middle School.

Mystics Rally for Thrilling 82-80 Victory Over Sparks

In a thrilling turn of events, the Washington Mystics pulled off a dramatic 82-80 comeback win against the L.A. Sparks. Coming into the game with a 4-15 record, the Mystics had been struggling, but their tenacity shone through. The Sparks dominated for three quarters, leading 64-52 heading into the final ten minutes.

However, the Mystics tightened their defense and found their shooting rhythm, scoring 30 points in the fourth quarter while allowing only 16. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough led the charge with 17 points off the bench, including key three-pointers. Despite the efforts of Talbot and McDonald, who each scored 17 for the Sparks, they couldn’t hold off the Mystics’ late surge.

Next, the Mystics face the Aces in Las Vegas on July 4th.
