High Temps Ahead: Protect Yourself from the Summer Heat in Bowie

As summer approaches, Bowie is gearing up for a stretch of scorching high temperatures. Weather forecasts predict a series of days with temperatures soaring into the upper 90s. This intense heat poses risks, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children.
To stay safe during this heatwave, consider these five essential tips:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Avoid sugary and alcoholic beverages.
2. Limit Sun Exposure: Try to stay indoors during peak heat hours, typically between 10:00AM. and 4:00PM., when the sun is strongest.
3. Wear Light Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabrics to help keep your body cool.
4. Use Sunscreen: Protect your skin by applying sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours if you're outdoors.
5. Seek Air Conditioning: Spend time in air-conditioned environments, such as shopping malls, libraries, or community centers, to avoid heat-related illnesses.
By following these tips, residents can stay cool and safe during Bowie’s hot summer days. Let’s all stay vigilant and take care!
Who Helps in Connecting Bowie
Last Friday we shared that the City of Bowie is making significant strides in improving its transportation infrastructure to enhance connectivity, safety, and sustainability for its residents. Bowie is not alone in making improvements to our City; there are various other entities, other than the City, who handle some of the projects. In the report, the responsible agency is noted in parentheses in the underlined project subheading.

Bowie’s Annual Juneteenth Celebration
Bowie celebrated Juneteenth with vibrant festivities, marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The event saw a large turnout at Allen Pond Park, filled with music, food, and cultural performances. Among the notable attendees were Washington Commanders legend Brian Mitchell, who shared inspiring words about freedom and resilience. NBC Washington's Derrick Ward provided live coverage, capturing the joy and significance of the day. Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks also graced the event, emphasizing the importance of community and heritage in her speech. The celebration was a heartfelt tribute to history, bringing together residents for a day of reflection, unity, and joy. The Father’s Day Bike Ride with the Bowie PD was preceded the Juneteenth Festival.

Summer Fun with Reading and Math Adventures

Now that Prince George’s County schools have let out for summer, it's a good time to infuse fun and learning into summer break. Engaging in reading and math activities during the break keeps young minds sharp and curious. The Bowie and South Bowie libraries offer exciting summer reading programs, filled with captivating books that transport readers to magical worlds. Meanwhile, math can be just as enjoyable with hands-on activities like cooking, where measuring ingredients becomes a playful lesson. Parents can turn everyday outings into learning opportunities, such as counting seashells at the beach or solving puzzles on road trips. These activities not only prevent the summer slide but also make learning a delightful part of summer adventures, ensuring children return to school ready to succeed.
