Washington Mystics Draw Record-Breaking Crowd at Capital One Arena

Last Friday, the Washington Mystics hosted the Indiana Fever at Capital One Arena and achieved significant attendance milestones. The game drew a sellout crowd of 20,333 fans, marking the highest attendance for a Mystics game since 1999 and surpassing any game since the 2007 WNBA Finals. This game now holds the record for the most attended regular-season game in the current era.

Unlike the 1990s, when WNBA teams often distributed free tickets to boost attendance, the Mystics sold all seats at prices comparable to those for a Washington Wizards game against top-tier opponents. According to sports business reporter Joe Pompliano, the game generated over $1 million in gate receipts, setting a new team record.

These achievements highlight the growing willingness of fans to pay premium prices for women's professional basketball. However, it's worth noting that Capital One Arena's size contributed to the record-setting attendance. Additionally, the high turnout was largely due to the draw of Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark, a standout from her college career at Iowa.

The Fever, currently 3-8 and second worst in the WNBA, will need to maintain this level of interest to continue filling large arenas. For the Mystics, while the attendance record is a notable business success, their 0-11 record underscores the challenges they face in rebuilding their team effectively.
