Plan Ahead: Bowie’s Best Picnic Spots for Family Fun

As summer approaches, Bowie residents are gearing up for a season of outdoor events, with family reunions topping the list. The city’s parks and scenic picnic spots provide the perfect backdrop for these cherished gatherings. Popular locations like Allen Pond Park and Whitemarsh Park will be in high demand, offering ample space and beautiful surroundings for families to come together. To secure a spot, early reservations are essential. The City of Bowie Parks and Grounds Division recommends booking as soon as possible to ensure availability. With picnic tables, grills, and open spaces for games and activities, Bowie’s parks are set to host a summer filled with laughter, bonding, and unforgettable memories. Start planning now to make the most of the sunny season.

Gas Tax to Decrease Slightly in July

Maryland’s gas tax will decrease by 0.9 cents per gallon on July 1, reducing the rate to 46.10 cents per gallon. This is the third reduction since the tax was linked to inflation in 2013. The decrease is due to lower retail gas prices, offsetting a potential increase from a 3.4% rise in the consumer price index. The diesel fuel tax will also drop to 46.85 cents per gallon. While the decrease offers relief to motorists, it may strain the state’s Transportation Trust Fund, which relies heavily on gas tax revenue to support highway and transit projects.

FBI Warns Maryland Drivers of New Toll Text Scam

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office warns residents of a text scam involving unpaid E-ZPass tolls. Attorney General Anthony G. Brown cautions consumers about scam texts claiming you owe money for unpaid tolls. The fake message reads: “Maryland Toll Services: We’ve noticed an outstanding toll amount of $12.51 on your record. To avoid a late fee of $50.00, visit [website] to settle your invoice.”

Do not pay or share personal information. Instead, follow these steps:

- Do not click any links in the text.

- Report the scam to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.

- Verify your account on the official toll service website, https://driveezmd.com.

- Call E-ZPass customer service at 1-888-321-6824.

- Delete the scam text.

If you have paid or shared information, contact the payment facilitator, the Attorney General’s Identity Theft Unit, and local law enforcement. Report to the Office of the Attorney General or the FTC.

Protect Yourself from Virtual Kidnapping Scams: Tips and Warnings

Virtual kidnapping scams are becoming more common, preying on people's fears and emotions. Scammers call, claiming a loved one is held captive, demanding ransom via wire transfer. The scammers are also using AI to pretend to be a family member who is in desperate need of money.

These calls often come from unfamiliar area codes, especially Puerto Rico (787, 939, 856) using urgent and threatening language to manipulate victims. Scammers often prevent contact with the alleged victim.

To protect yourself, follow these five tips:

  • Verify the claim: Contact the alleged victim directly to confirm their safety.

  • Ask specific questions: Challenge the scammer by requesting details about the supposed victim.

  • Never send money: Do not transfer funds without verifying the claim.

  • Limit personal information: Adjust privacy settings on social media to prevent scammers from gathering details.

  • Report to authorities: Notify local police immediately if you receive a suspicious call.

Staying cautious and informed can help you avoid falling victim to these deceitful schemes.
