The Field of Honor is a patriotic display of over 150 flags set up to honor those who serve our nation and those who have come before. Located in Bowie at Sussex Lane Park, each flag features a dedication card. Residents, businesses, organizations, schools, and houses of worship are invited to dedicate a flag in memory of an individual or group.

The Field of Honor will remain until June 5.

Prince George's County Maintains Financial Excellence with AAA Bond Rating

Prince George's County has maintained its AAA rating from Fitch Ratings ahead of a planned June bond sale, reaffirming approximately $300 million in general obligation (GO) bonds. This top-tier rating indicates a highly secure investment. Fitch's analysis highlights the county’s robust operating performance and financial resilience, noting strong budgetary flexibility with reserves expected to stay at or above 10% of spending, currently at 33%.

The importance of a AAA rating cannot be overstated. It reflects the county’s ability to manage its finances effectively, ensuring low borrowing costs and investor confidence. A downgrade could significantly increase the county's borrowing costs, impacting its financial health. Maintaining this rating protects the county's economic stability and growth.

Alert: Maryland Enacts Tougher Penalties for Work Zone Speeding and Street Racing

Several new laws take effect June 1 in Maryland, including a significant increase in fines for speeding in road construction zones. Passed during the General Assembly session ending April 8 and signed by Governor Wes Moore, HB513 doubles work zone speeding fines to $80 from $40. On January 1, 2025, fines will increase based on the driver's speed, with penalties ranging from $60 to $1,000 if workers are present.

The law responds to a March 2023 crash on Interstate 695 that killed six road crew workers. Two drivers, speeding near 120 mph, caused the fatal accident. One driver was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison.

Additionally, HB601/SB442 raises penalties for street racing and exhibition driving, including fines, license points, and jail time. Exhibition driving, defined as reckless driving near crowds, now carries fines up to $1,000, license points, and potential jail time.
