Bowie Commemorates Asian Pacific American Heritage Heritage Month

The City of Bowie is celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month throughout May. This month-long observance honors the significant contributions of the AANHPI community. May was chosen to commemorate two historical events: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which was largely built by Chinese laborers. Bowie encourages its residents to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and impactful achievements of the AANHPI community.

Say Goodbye to Sleepless Nights – Here's How

May is Better Sleep Month, a celebration dedicated to the power of a good night’s rest. As spring breathes new life into our days, it’s the perfect time to revitalize our sleep routines too. Quality sleep isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity for a healthy, happy life. Here are five tips to help you achieve the rest you deserve:
1. Establish a Consistent Schedule: Your body thrives on routine. Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your internal clock and improves the quality of your sleep.
2. Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment: Transform your bedroom into a sanctuary. Keep it cool, dark, and quiet. Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. Consider blackout curtains or a white noise machine if needed.
3. Limit Screen Time Before Bed: The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and computers can interfere with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. Turn off electronics at least an hour before bedtime to help your brain wind down.
4. Mind Your Diet: What you eat and drink can significantly impact your sleep. Avoid caffeine and heavy meals in the evening. Instead, opt for a light snack like a banana or a handful of almonds if you’re peckish before bed.
5. Practice Relaxation Techniques: Incorporate calming activities into your evening routine. Try deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle yoga. These practices can help reduce stress and prepare your body for restful sleep.
This May, make a commitment to better sleep and experience the myriad benefits of waking up refreshed and energized. Sweet dreams!

Bowie’s Plant One Tree on Us Program
The Bowie City Council set a goal of 45% tree canopy coverage, and residential land has the highest potential for increasing urban tree canopy (UTC). A UTC is the layer of tree leaves and branches seen from above.
Planting trees in Bowie and communities abroad offers numerous benefits to the community and environment. Trees improve air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen, contributing to healthier living conditions. They also provide shade, reducing the urban heat island effect and lowering energy costs by keeping homes cooler in the summer. Additionally, trees help manage stormwater by absorbing rainfall, reducing runoff, and preventing soil erosion. Their roots stabilize the soil, which is essential for preventing landslides and maintaining the integrity of landscapes. Trees also enhance property values and create aesthetically pleasing neighborhoods, fostering a sense of community pride. Moreover, they provide habitats for local wildlife, supporting biodiversity. Overall, planting trees is a valuable investment in Bowie's environmental health and quality of life.
The program will open for new requests on August 1, 2024.
