Promising Outlook: Maryland's Blue Crab Season Set to Thrive

Do you remember the days when we had plenty of Mexican restaurants in Bowie to choose from? Within about a two mile radius there was Don Pablos, On the Border and Chili’s.

Things have changed and so has the restaurant landscape. Today we have plenty of places to get crabs and crab legs. This includes Rock & Toss Crab House, The Twisted Crab, Crafty Crab and The Crab Gallery, which is great if you are a crab lover like me, waiting for the return of crab season.

The upcoming Maryland crab season holds promise as early indicators suggest a healthy blue crab population, buoying hopes among local fishermen and seafood lovers alike. Recent environmental surveys have shown an uptick in juvenile crab numbers, a critical factor for sustaining the population. This improvement is largely due to stricter fishing regulations and favorable ecological conditions, which have helped curb the previous decline. Maryland's Department of Natural Resources remains cautiously optimistic, endorsing sustainable fishing practices to protect this vital resource. As restaurants and markets prepare for increased demand, the local economy is poised for a boost. Crab festivals and culinary events are already on the calendar, ready to celebrate the season's bounty. This year's abundance is not just good news for the economy but also for Maryland's cultural heritage, as blue crabs are a cherished staple on many a summer table.

Over $1 Billion in Unclaimed 2020 Tax Refunds—Are You Missing Out

Taxpayers have until May 17 to file their 2020 tax returns and claim part of the over $1 billion in unclaimed refunds, the IRS announced. This extension, originally set for three years, was prolonged due to COVID-19 disruptions. With the median refund estimated at $932, approximately 940,000 Americans have yet to claim their dues. "Hundreds of thousands have money waiting to be claimed. We urge everyone to file their 2020 returns before the deadline to ensure they receive what they're owed," stated IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. The IRS also released state-by-state estimates of individuals eligible for these refunds.
