Unexpected Tremors - Did You Feel It?
The East Coast was jolted awake on April 5, 2024, by an unexpected guest: an earthquake. Rare for this part of the country, the tremor prompted both curiosity and concern among residents and scientists alike. Earthquakes on the East Coast, while infrequent, remind us of the Earth's dynamic nature.
Countdown to April 15 Tax Filing Deadline

As the calendar flips closer to April 15, 2024, a sense of urgency envelops procrastinators and diligent planners alike. This critical juncture, where the rush of tax season intersects with the final countdown, calls for strategic action and calm decision-making. The upcoming collection of tax tips serves to assist those navigating the tumultuous waters of last-minute filing.
1. Verify Your Information: Double-check all personal information, including your Social Security number, address, and the names on your tax return. Simple mistakes can lead to processing delays.
2. Contribute to Retirement Accounts: Remember, you can still make contributions to your IRA for the 2023 tax year until April 15, 2024. This can reduce your taxable income and save money on taxes.
3. Use IRS Free File: If your income is $73,000 or less, take advantage of the IRS Free File program for free tax preparation and electronic filing.
4. Request an Extension if Needed: If you can’t meet the April 15 deadline, file for an extension to avoid late filing penalties. Remember, an extension to file isn’t an extension to pay any taxes owed.
5. Maximize Deductions: Don’t overlook potential deductions, including charitable donations, medical expenses, and business expenses for the self-employed.
6. Report All Income: Ensure you report all sources of income, including freelance work, interest, dividends, and any side gigs, to avoid issues with the IRS.
7. Consider Health Savings Account (HSA) Contributions: If eligible, contributing to an HSA not only lowers your taxable income but also provides a smart way to save for medical expenses.
8. Review Tax Credits: Tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child Tax Credit (CTC) can be significant. Ensure you claim any credits for which you're eligible.
9. File Electronically and Opt for Direct Deposit: Electronic filing with direct deposit is the quickest way to get your refund. Paper returns can take significantly longer to process.
10. Seek Professional Help if Overwhelmed: If you’re unsure about your tax situation or deductions, consulting a tax professional can provide clarity and help avoid costly errors.
Consult a tax professional or the IRS for assistance.

Bowie Scores Big with 'Ballin' with the Badge': Community Unity in Action

Bowie witnessed an extraordinary event bounced into action today, painting the town with sportsmanship and unity. The "Ballin' with the Badge," basketball game wasn't your ordinary match-up. It was a lively, heartfelt gathering where Bowie Police officers swapped their badges for basketballs, dribbling their way into the community's heart.
The game at Benjamin Tasker Middle School drew Mayor Adams, Council Members, Bowie Police Chief Preston and Deputy Chief Jefferson, Benjamin Tasker Principal Dr. Kendra Hill and PTSO, many families, teenagers, and seniors alike for cheering and laughing, as officers and students showcased their skills and camaraderie on the court. With the gym rocking with music by 93.9 WKYS, the event aimed not just to score points but to knit the community closer, fostering relationships beyond the uniform.
Through every pass, shot, and high-five, "Ballin' with the Badge" did more than just entertain; it bridged gaps, and highlighted the shared humanity between the people of Bowie and their protectors. For a day, the basketball court became a beacon of unity, proving that when a community comes together, everyone wins.
