In Bowie, the harmonious blend of community and safety is paramount, and abiding by the speed limit plays a pivotal role. Speed limits, especially in residential areas, are not just numbers on signs but vital safeguards for our neighbors and children. Here, respecting these limits brings manifold benefits: it significantly reduces the likelihood of accidents, lessens the severity of crashes that do occur, and provides a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists. Moreover, it ensures a tranquil ambiance for residents and conserves fuel, contributing to environmental sustainability.

However, the perils of speeding are stark, with increased risks of losing control, extended stopping distances, and a higher probability of fatal accidents. In residential neighborhoods, these dangers are accentuated where children play and families live.

The strategic placement of speed cameras help with safety in Bowie. These digital guardians have been instrumental in encouraging drivers to slow down, thereby enhancing safety. Acting as a deterrent to speeding, they remind drivers of the importance of vigilance and responsibility, ensuring Bowie remains a safe haven for its residents.

Notice

The Police Department approved the movement of three residential speed cameras, effective immediately. The new locations are 12911 Kendale Lane (WB), 15900 Penn Manor Lane (EB), and 2817 Stonybrook Drive (SB). The 30-day warning period will last until April 30, 2024. After that time, Civil citations, carrying a fine of $40, will be issued.

The Bowie State football team collaborated with the Washington Commanders for a food drive, part of their commitment to community service. Organized with the help of the campus Prevention Center, the event involved local Safeway stores and featured special appearances, including from former star Santana Moss. It offered a chance for the team to engage with the community and support local student pantries, with proceeds benefiting Bowie State University's Nutrition Lounge and Howard University Student Pantry. The initiative was praised by team members as a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the community and raise awareness about Bowie State University.
