Bowie Rises as a Champion of Wildlife Through NWF Certification Efforts

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) emphasizes the severe impact of habitat loss on America's wildlife, largely due to human activities. This loss manifests through habitat destruction, degradation, and fragmentation, which significantly impair the ability of animals to access essential resources. In urban and suburban areas, like Bowie, the division of natural landscapes by roads and development poses a notable threat. To combat these challenges, Bowie has partnered with NWF's Community Wildlife Habitat program, encouraging residents and institutions to create spaces that provide food, water, cover, and breeding grounds for wildlife. Participation involves meeting educational and project requirements, and successful properties are recognized as Certified Wildlife Habitats by NWF.

Since 2016, Bowie proudly holds the distinction of being Maryland's fifth and 95th community in Maryland with NWF Certified Community Wildlife Habitat, continuing to work towards maintaining and expanding this status with additional backyard certifications and community engagement, as evidenced by signage around notable city locations and the promotion of resources like the Prince George's County Audubon Society's Habitat Advisors program for those interested in contributing to local wildlife conservation efforts.
