Iconic Bowie Sign to Get Artistic Makeover in Community-Engaged Project

The City of Bowie embarks on a transformative public art initiative with the Bowie Signage Replacement Project. Set to revitalize the landmark at the crossroads of Route 197 and Kenhill Drive, this endeavor involves the overhaul of the city's beloved "living" sign. Through this project, a new art piece, doubling as signage, will be conceptualized, designed, and erected in the same revered space. It aims to harmonize with the surrounding landscape while elevating the site's visual appeal. Integral to the design process is the inclusion of community feedback, ensuring that the final artwork not only enhances the area's aesthetic but also resonates with the residents it represents. This upcoming project promises to reforge an iconic landmark, making it a source of pride and beauty for Bowie for many years ahead.

A New Era for Pimlico: How HB 1524 Plans to Rebuild Maryland's Racing Legacy

House Bill 1524, a pivotal racing legislation introduced in the Maryland General Assembly, aims at more than its text reveals, focusing on transformative changes in the state's horse racing landscape. Under this proposal, the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority (MTROA) and Stronach Group will forge agreements enabling MTROA to revamp the deteriorating Pimlico Race Course and ensure racing continuity at Laurel Park, alongside day-to-day racing operations and eventually taking over the Preakness Stakes management.

The "Pimlico Plus" initiative, as it's termed, includes significant legal amendments, notably extending the transfer deadline of the Bowie training center to the City of Bowie, recognizing Bowie's potential yet challenging fit for a new training site. The legislation also increases the Maryland Stadium Authority's bond issuance to $400 million to fund the projects, with specified amounts for Pimlico's reconstruction and training center development, reflecting a comprehensive upgrade of Maryland's racing facilities. Additionally, it introduces workforce housing plans around Pimlico and the training center, revises financial allocations affecting the standardbred industry, and adjusts sales tax revenues and licensing fees to support the project's financing. Despite facing criticisms, particularly from standardbred representatives and concerns about community benefits and racing infrastructure, the bill represents a forward-looking investment in the state's racing future.
