Bowie Police Department Welcomes New Deputy Chief with Proven Track Record of Innovation

Beginning Sunday, March 24, 2024, the City of Bowie Police Department embarks on a new chapter with Captain Rachel Jefferson ascending to the role of Deputy Chief of Police. Having demonstrated her capability in an interim capacity for the last seven months, Jefferson's official promotion marks a historic moment in the department's hierarchy.

Her ascension follows a comprehensive selection process, highlighting Jefferson as a distinguished figure within the force, lauded for her meticulous planning, forward-thinking methods, and her proven track record of achieving objectives. Jefferson, who initially kickstarted her law enforcement career with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., joined the Bowie Police Department ranks in 2008. Her promotion to Deputy Chief breaks new ground as she is the first female within the department to advance from the position of Officer to Commander.

During her term as Captain, Jefferson was instrumental in managing daily operational tasks and leading major projects, including the establishment of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Unit, the Strategic Tactic and Response (STAR) Team, and refining the department's policies. Her efforts were crucial in the CALEA accreditation process, focusing on bolstering standards for safety and health within law enforcement agencies.

Jefferson's academic credentials comprise a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Pennsylvania State University, a Master’s degree in human services with a focus on counseling from the University of Maryland, and she is an alumnus of the School of Police Staff & Command at Northwestern University, a program renowned for its emphasis on leadership and management excellence in preparation for senior law enforcement roles.
