Bowie Leads in Pedestrian Safety with New HAWK Beacon Activation

Bowie activated of a groundbreaking pedestrian safety enhancement with the introduction of the High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacon at the crossroads of MD 197 (Collington Road) and Lerner Place. This initiative, spearheaded by the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, marks the debut of such a device on a State-managed highway within Prince George’s County, setting a precedent for pedestrian safety.

The HAWK beacon, a sophisticated traffic management tool, aims to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians across busy thoroughfares. It operates on a simple yet effective mechanism: pedestrians press a button to activate the beacon, similar to traditional crosswalks. Upon activation, the beacon signals drivers with a sequence of yellow and red lights, indicating when to stop and allow pedestrians to cross. This system guarantees a safer crossing, particularly beneficial for accessing local amenities such as parks, schools, and the East Coast Greenway.

The installation of the HAWK beacon is the result of a collaborative effort between the State Highway Administration, the City of Bowie, and its residents, reflecting a community-centric approach to transportation safety. This project aligns with the State Highway Administration’s “Context Driven” guide, which advises engineers on tailoring roadway designs to the unique needs of different community settings, from urban cores to rural areas. The guide emphasizes adaptable features like reduced speed limits and enhanced crosswalks, contributing to safer, more pedestrian-friendly roadways.
