Scammers Use Real Deputies’ Names in Phone Payment Con

Law enforcement officials are cautioning the community following reports from several individuals who received fraudulent calls from someone alleging to be affiliated with the sheriff's office, demanding money to settle supposed outstanding warrants. In a deceptive twist, the scammer utilized the names of actual deputies, lending a false sense of legitimacy to their claims. The caller masqueraded as a sheriff's deputy or the sheriff himself, informing victims they had either a federal warrant or a jury duty bench warrant against them. Victims were instructed to pay between $3,500 and $5,000 via Cash App or gift cards to rectify the situation.

Authorities emphasize that the sheriff's office will never contact individuals by phone to request payments. They advise anyone who receives such a call purporting to be from a Prince George’s County Sheriff Deputy or the Sheriff to immediately disconnect and avoid disclosing any personal information. This incident marks not the first occurrence of this scam in the region, with a similar alert issued by the police just last month.
