Navigating the Aftermath: Prince George's County Public Schools Responds to Data Breach

A cyber-attack on Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) that occurred between August 3 and 14, 2023, compromising the personal information of students, staff, and affiliates. This breach exposed sensitive data, including Social Security numbers, medical information, and financial account details. In response, PGCPS quickly provided credit monitoring services, engaged cybersecurity experts for a thorough investigation, and initiated communication efforts to inform affected individuals through notification letters sent on February 16, 2024.

The school system has advised on additional protective measures such as monitoring accounts, securing credit reports, and considering fraud alerts or credit freezes. Moving forward, PGCPS is focused on enhancing security measures to prevent future breaches, highlighting the shared responsibility of individuals and institutions in maintaining cybersecurity. A dedicated assistance line has been established for those seeking further information or help related to the breach.
