Celebrating Bowie's Heart of Baseball: Prince George's Stadium, Baysox Triumphs & Local Fests!

Prince George's Stadium, home of the Bowie Baysox, has a rich history that intertwines with the evolution of baseball in Maryland. Its journey began when the Baltimore Orioles' Double-A affiliate, previously located in Hagerstown as the Suns, moved to Bowie in 1993. This move was spurred by a surge in demand for professional baseball in Bowie, leading to the introduction of a new AA affiliate for the Orioles.

The name "Baysox" was chosen for the team through a fan vote, which attracted over 3,500 participants. This name was a nod to Bowie's proximity to the Chesapeake Bay. However, the stadium's construction faced hurdles. Groundbreaking took place in the fall of 1993, but bad weather delayed its completion. Consequently, the Baysox had to play their initial season in Baltimore’s Municipal Stadium, which was vacant following the Orioles' move to Camden Yards.

Due to continued construction delays, the Baysox played the first 31 games of the 1994 season at various other ballparks before finally moving into Prince George’s Stadium in mid-June 1994. Despite these early challenges, the stadium quickly became a staple for baseball in the region, hosting the Double-A All-Star Game in 2000, which drew a record attendance of around 14,000 people.

Beyond baseball, the stadium has been a versatile venue. It has hosted a variety of events, including the United States Congressional Baseball Game, charity softball games, lacrosse tournaments, concerts, and even Halloween activities. Its location near several local military bases, such as Fort George G. Meade and Andrews Air Force Base, has allowed for promotions and events involving enlisted persons. In 2007, for example, 5,000 tickets were distributed to soldiers on Flag Day for an event with professional wrestler Sergeant Slaughter.

Despite not being the most unique park, Prince George's Stadium is appreciated for its modern amenities and the great views it offers from every seat. It has a typical layout of ballparks from its era, with a concourse on top of the seating bowl providing views of the action. The stadium also features a kids' play area, a carousel, and a lighthouse down the right field line, reflecting its location near the Chesapeake Bay.

The Bowie Baysox themselves have had a mixed history in terms of performance. They made the Eastern League playoffs in their early years but faced a playoff drought from 1998 through 2007. Notable alumni from the team include Erik Bedard, Armando Benitez, and Brian Roberts, among others.

Overall, Prince George's Stadium has not only been a center for baseball but also a community hub, contributing significantly to the local sports and entertainment scene in Bowie, Maryland.

Prince George's County Eyes School HQ Relocation to Largo: Modernization Move Meets Upper Marlboro's Growth Plans

Prince George's County in Maryland is considering relocating its school system headquarters from Upper Marlboro to a more central location within the county. The proposed plan, introduced by state legislators, aims to move the central office to a site with better public transportation access. Superintendent Millard House II prefers Largo for its central location and existing county agencies, while COO Charoscar Coleman suggests a multi-hub approach with a primary center in Largo and satellites in the north and south of the county.

The school system currently operates from 17 aging offices across the county, with the central office staff totaling around 3,300. These facilities are inefficient and costly to maintain. The move to a new, centralized location is seen as a step towards modernization and efficiency.

Upper Marlboro's Mayor, Sarah Franklin, acknowledges the necessity of the school system's move but also highlights the town's plans for redevelopment and economic growth. This includes expanding the downtown area and enhancing infrastructure to attract new employers and tourists, countering the impact of the school system's potential departure.

Overall, the relocation of Prince George's County school headquarters is part of a larger effort to improve operational efficiency and accessibility, while Upper Marlboro prepares for economic transformation in response to these changes.
