Over a Thousand Flights Canceled as Snow Blankets Washington D.C. Airports

Heavy snowfall coupled with freezing temperatures in the Washington D.C. area on Friday caused significant disruption to flights at local airports. The most affected was Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), where approximately 20% of flights were canceled. Over 200 flights were canceled and nearly 400 delayed at DCA, partly due to a temporary suspension of operations on Friday morning until 8:15 a.m.

Flightaware.com reports that regional airlines PSA and Republic experienced the most cancellations and delays at DCA. In contrast, Frontier Airlines managed to avoid cancellations, reporting only two delayed flights.

Dulles International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport also faced disruptions, with hundreds of delays but notably fewer cancellations compared to DCA.

By 2:00 p.m. on Friday, DCA had recorded over 3 inches of snowfall, while Dulles and BWI airports each reported over 4 inches. This severe winter weather led to more than a thousand flight cancellations and over 21,000 delays nationwide.

Always check with the airline regarding your flight when possible weather events that could cause significant delays.
