Catch up on the Latest Bowie City Council Meeting January 16th
The Regular Bowie City Council meeting was held on January 16 at Bowie City Hall. Topics discussed included initiatives for Black History Month, homelessness, community engagement, updates on a new STEM charter school, traffic calming measures, community concerns, and upcoming projects. To view recording of the meeting visit the YouTube Chanel.
Bowie’s Traffic Calming Measures

In Bowie City, traffic safety is a priority, leading to the adoption of the Prince George County Neighborhood Traffic Management Program. This program guides residents on how to request traffic calming measures in their neighborhoods. The process begins with community involvement, requiring residents to reach out to their Homeowner Association (HOA) or, in areas without an HOA, their elected Councilperson.
Requests are then forwarded by the HOA or Councilperson to the Department of Public Works (DPW). DPW conducts a thorough traffic study and engineering analysis to determine if traffic calming is warranted. Possible measures range from educational initiatives to physical alterations like speed humps, traffic circles, and in extreme cases, road closures. These measures, especially physical changes, need neighborhood consensus and approval from emergency services before implementation. Once there is community support and validation of the traffic study, the City will implement the measures as funds become available.
Snow Days: A Wonderland of Indoor Fun for School-Age Children

With more snow, ice and fridge temperatures forecasted there are things that you can do to have some indoor fun when families find themselves nestled at home, sharing the unexpected gift of a snow day.
For parents, these days present a unique opportunity to engage with their school-age children in ways that are both fun and memorable. While the outdoors beckons with its snowy charm, the indoor realm can be just as enchanting. Let’s explore five delightful activities that can turn any snow day into an indoor wonderland of fun and creativity.
1. Culinary Creations: Baking a Winter Wonderland
Imagine the kitchen filled with the sweet aroma of baking. Parents and children can don their aprons and embark on a culinary adventure. From snowflake-shaped cookies to homemade hot chocolate, the kitchen becomes a laboratory for delicious experiments. It's not just about the tasty treats; it's about the stories shared and the laughter that echoes off the walls.
2. Crafting a World of Imagination: DIY Snow Globes
Snow globes, those mesmerizing mini winter scenes, can be created right at home. With simple materials like jars, glitter, water, and figurines, families can construct their own snowy landscapes. This activity isn’t just crafting; it’s a way to capture the magic of the snow day in a globe, a keepsake for years to come.
3. The Theatrical Escape: Puppet Show Extravaganza
Transform the living room into a stage where imagination knows no bounds. Children, with the help of their parents, can create puppets using socks, paper bags, or even old mittens. Scripting a short play or reenacting a favorite story not only sparks creativity but also builds confidence and communication skills.
4. The Cozy Corner: A Book Marathon
There’s something magical about curling up with a good book when the weather outside is frightful. Creating a cozy reading nook with blankets and pillows can make this experience even more special. Parents can read aloud, or everyone can dive into their own book, only emerging to share the exciting tales they’ve discovered.
5. Time Capsule: Preserving Snow Day Memories
Finally, why not encapsulate the day’s joy by creating a time capsule? Fill it with drawings, written memories of the day, or even a recipe card of what was baked. Seal it and decide on a future date for reopening, a moment in time when the family will reminisce about the magical snow day spent indoors.
In conclusion, snow days are more than just a pause in the usual routine; they are an opportunity for families to bond, create, and make memories that last a lifetime. By embracing these indoor activities, parents and children can discover new ways to enjoy each other’s company, fostering a sense of togetherness that endures long after the snow has melted.
