Victory for Parents at Pointer Ridge Elementary

With the help of parents and the community standing up to save Pointer Ridge Elementary in Bowie, MD, the school will now remain open and become a center for students who have autism. Pointer Ridge was slated to close permanently due to low enrollment. However, it is expected that due to increased development in the area, there will also be an increase in the school’s student enrollment.

Maryland's Green Leap: $15M Grant Fuels 58 New EV Charging Stations

Maryland is poised to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with a substantial $15 million federal grant, allowing for the installation of 58 new EV charging stations statewide. This development, championed by Governor Wes Moore, is expected to generate 600 electrician jobs and is aligned with Maryland's ambitious climate change objectives, including a goal of 100% clean energy by 2035 and zero emissions by 2045. A key feature of this initiative is its emphasis on lower-income and traditionally underserved communities, with many new charging stations earmarked for these areas.

The announcement was made at Baltimore's Coppin State University, a future site for one of the charging stations. This initiative is part of a larger Biden-Harris administration plan, which involves distributing $623 million in grants, funded by the over $1 trillion infrastructure law, to help develop a nationwide EV charging network.

The event was attended by U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, who highlighted the focus on underserved communities and the economic benefits of transitioning to zero or low emission vehicles. The federal government, in collaboration with state authorities and the private sector, aims to establish 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. However, there are challenges to be overcome, including 'range anxiety' among consumers, which has led to slower than expected EV sales growth despite incentives like tax credits.

Bulldogs Victorious in the MLK Unity Invitational (79-58)

The Bowie State women's basketball team achieved a convincing 79-58 victory over the Shaw Lady Bears at the MLK Unity Invitational in Greenville, SC. Displaying exceptional skill in three-point shooting, the Bulldogs boasted a 50% success rate from beyond the arc, contributing significantly to their win.

Anii Harris led the team with 21 points, complemented by solid performances from Robyn Howard with 20 points and Jayla Irvin with 19. Howard notably achieved a personal best with six three-pointers. The team's defensive prowess was also evident, as they restricted Shaw to a mere 36.2% field goal percentage and dominated with 32 defensive rebounds. Key moments included a 6-0 run in the first quarter and a decisive 10-0 streak in the fourth, cementing their dominance throughout the game.
