Bowie State University Welcomes Dr. Guyden as New Interim Dean of Graduate School
Dr. Janet A. Guyden takes on the role of Interim Dean of the Graduate School at Bowie State University, armed with over 30 years of experience in academic leadership. Her focus is on enhancing the graduate school by applying her extensive knowledge and experience in evaluating and improving programs and processes. With a rich educational background and a history of significant roles in higher education, Dr. Guyden is set to make a substantial impact on the university’s graduate offerings.
Alfred Lott, the City Manager of Bowie, has recently announced the appointment of Dwayne Preston, a veteran in law enforcement with 30 years of experience, as the new Chief of Police. This decision comes in the wake of John Nesky's retirement, who previously held the position for 12 years. Lott emphasized that the selection process was thorough and nationwide, ultimately leading to the conclusion that Preston, familiar with the local dynamics, is the ideal candidate for the role.
Preston's tenure as Deputy Chief was marked by significant contributions, including his role as the main architect of strategic plans, managing internal investigations, and overseeing daily operations. Notably, he was instrumental in introducing the body-worn camera program within the department. His involvement extended beyond departmental duties, as he actively participated in the police reform task force convened by County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, aiming to enhance both the Bowie Police Department and policing standards in general.
Preston's background is deeply rooted in the local community. He is an alumnus of DeMatha Catholic High School, Bowie State University, and the University of Maryland. His prior experience includes a significant tenure as Deputy Chief of the Bureau of Administration at the Prince George’s County Police Department.
While Preston's appointment is effective immediately, a formal swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at the upcoming City Council meeting on January 2, 2024. This ceremony will mark the official commencement of his duties as the Chief of Police.

Dwayne Preston, A Local Law Enforcement Stalwart, Appointed as Bowie's New Chief of Police - Ceremony Jan 2
Alfred Lott, the City Manager of Bowie, has appointed Dwayne Preston as the new Chief of Police, effective immediately. Preston, a veteran with 30 years of law enforcement experience, succeeds John Nesky, who retired in September after 12 years in the role. The appointment came after an extensive, nationwide search, with Lott expressing confidence in Preston's understanding of Bowie and his ability to maintain the city's tradition of integrity and community policing.
Preston's previous roles include Deputy Chief of Bowie Police, where he authored strategic plans, managed internal investigations, and implemented a body-worn camera program. He also contributed to a police reform task force led by County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. Preston, a graduate of DeMatha Catholic High School, Bowie State University, and the University of Maryland, previously served as Deputy Chief of the Bureau of Administration at Prince George’s County Police Department. His formal swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for the next City Council meeting on January 2, 2024.
