Charge Smart, Stay Safe This Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week is October 4–10, and this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” focuses on the safe use of lithium-ion batteries.

These rechargeable batteries power many everyday devices, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, power tools, e-bikes, e-scooters, electric vehicles, and portable power stations. While convenient, lithium-ion batteries can become a fire hazard when damaged, improperly charged, or used with incompatible equipment.

Keep your home and family safer with these simple charging habits:

Use the correct charger. Use the charger provided with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

Choose a safe surface. Charge devices on a hard, flat surface—not on beds, couches, under pillows, or other soft surfaces.

Watch for warning signs. Stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smokes, smells strange, or makes unusual noises.

Unplug when fully charged. Avoid leaving devices connected longer than necessary.

Keep exits clear. Charge e-bikes, power tools, and other large equipment away from doors and escape routes.

Charge safely while traveling. On airplanes, keep charging devices where you can see them and never charge them in overhead compartments.

During Fire Prevention Week, take a few minutes to check the rechargeable devices and chargers around your home. Small changes in charging habits can help prevent fires and keep your household safer.
