How Bowie Works: Your Quick Guide to City Government

If you’ve ever wondered how decisions get made in Bowie, here’s a quick, easy breakdown of how our local government works—and why it matters to you.

The City of Bowie is governed by a Mayor and six Council members, all elected every four years in nonpartisan elections, with all seats up for election at the same time. The Mayor and two Councilmembers represent the entire city, while four Councilmembers represent specific districts. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and meet residency requirements.

Bowie operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council sets policies, approves the budget, and oversees city operations. The Mayor leads Council meetings and serves as the ceremonial head, with a Mayor Pro Tem stepping in when needed.

The Council appoints a City Manager, who acts as the Chief Executive Officer, overseeing departments, managing daily operations, and ensuring that policies and laws are properly implemented.

Ready, Set, VOTE: meet your primary candidates May 17

This is a free community event where people can meet County, State, and Federal candidates running in the June 23 Primary Election for seats in Prince George's County and Congressional District 5. Attendees can speak one-to-one with candidates, register to vote, donate or select food and household goods, and participate in crafts. All ages welcome!
