Renovations Begin at the Amphitheater in Allen Pond Park

Renovations are underway at the amphitheater in Allen Pond Park, bringing upgrades to one of Bowie’s most popular outdoor gathering spaces. The project includes improved accessibility, new masonry features, and enhanced sound and lighting systems to support future performances and community events.

As construction continues, several large events—including BowieFest and the Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration—will not take place in their traditional format this summer. City officials say the temporary change will allow crews to complete key improvements that will benefit the venue long term.

While the amphitheater is being renovated, Bowie plans to offer a series of smaller community activities throughout the summer. Details about these events will be shared as work progresses, giving residents opportunities to stay connected while the beloved venue receives its long-awaited upgrades.

Nominations Open for Bowie’s Green Citizen Award

The Bowie Green Citizen Award honors residents of Bowie who promote sustainability and environmentally friendly practices in their homes and community. Actions may include conserving natural resources, cleaning streams or roads, removing invasive plants, managing stormwater with rain gardens or rain barrels, protecting wildlife habitats, using electric vehicles, installing solar panels, or educating others about climate change.

Nominations are open to individuals who live within the city’s incorporated limits.

Smart Tips to Keep Your Online Orders Safe at Your Doorstep

Online shopping is convenient, but it can also attract porch thieves. Taking a few simple steps can help protect packages delivered to your home and ensure your items arrive safely.

Ways to protect your deliveries:

  • Track deliveries closely. Use delivery apps and alerts so you know exactly when a package arrives.

  • Require a signature. For valuable items, request a signature so packages aren’t left unattended.

  • Install a doorbell camera. Visible cameras can deter thieves and help monitor deliveries.

  • Use a package lockbox. A secure box on your porch allows drivers to leave items safely.

  • Ask a neighbor for help. Trusted neighbors can bring packages inside if you’re away.

  • Schedule deliveries. Choose delivery times when someone will be home.

A few proactive steps can make a big difference in keeping your packages safe.

Bowie State Makes History With $128.5M Fundraising Campaign

Credit: Bowie State University

Bowie State University announced that its BSU BOLD: The Campaign for Excellence raised $128.5 million, more than doubling the campaign’s original goal and marking the largest fundraising achievement in the university’s history.

The campaign significantly boosted Bowie State’s endowment, which grew from $7 million to more than $50 million in seven years and is projected to reach $85 million by 2027. Donations from alumni, corporate partners, and philanthropists are helping expand scholarships, strengthen academic programs, and improve campus facilities.

Major gifts included two donations from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, including a historic $50 million contribution, along with support from organizations such as the Strada Education Foundation, Baltimore Gas and Electric, Adobe, and Elior North America.

Campaign investments also supported initiatives like the Maguire Academy of Insurance & Risk Management, a new basketball court, and a student Nutrition Lounge, enhancing both academic and student life experiences.
