“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.” ~ Mark Twain

Your Voice Matters: Help Shape the City’s Environmental Future

Want to make a real difference in your community’s future? Now’s your chance.

The City’s Department of Planning and Sustainability has just released the draft version of its new Environmental Action Plan (EAP) — a roadmap for how we’ll tackle climate change, protect natural resources, and build a greener, more sustainable city over the next decade.

This is more than just a document — it’s a call to action. And your input could help shape the direction taken.

Residents are invited to take a look at the draft plan and share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns. Whether you’re passionate about clean energy, green spaces, or reducing waste, your perspective can make a lasting impact.

To learn more and get involved, join the City’s virtual Environmental Action Plan webinar on Thursday, October 16, from 7:00 to 8:30pm on Microsoft Teams. It’s an easy, informative way to find out what’s in the plan and how you can play a part.

The 6th Annual Purple Bike Ride for Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Highlight Video

The event kicked off outside Bowie City Hall at 15901 Fred Robinson Way, where registration opened early and riders assembled in a sea of purple. County Executive Aisha Braveboy, a steadfast champion of survivors, reminded everyone that “domestic violence doesn’t discriminate … Together, we can stand against it, speak out, and break the cycle.”

To suit all levels, participants chose from three ride distances — a 30-mile advanced route, a 10-mile intermediate route, and a 3-mile family-friendly ride — and walkers were also welcome to join the journey.

The purple bike ride is not just a symbol — it’s a call to action. The event raises awareness, amplifies voices, and connects neighbors with the resources, conversations, and community support needed to prevent domestic violence and make our homes safer.

Every mile pedaled, every cheer offered, every purple ribbon seen — they all matter. In Bowie, that message rang loud and clear: we stand together. We remember. We resist. And with each new ride, we roll forward in hope.

🍁 Avoid Fines This Fall: Smart (and Legal) Ways to Handle Your Leaves

As autumn leaves begin to fall, residents are reminded that raking or blowing leaves into the street or near storm drains is not only harmful to the environment — it’s also illegal. Leaves can clog storm drains, cause flooding, and damage local waterways, qualifying as an "illicit discharge" under federal EPA regulations.

To stay compliant and avoid fines up to $250, residents should bag leaves in paper lawn bags for Wednesday pickup, use them as mulch, or compost them. Keeping storm drains clear is a simple way to protect the environment and support the city’s efforts to maintain clean, safe waterways.

County and State - Federal Government Shutdown Resources

As one of the closest jurisdictions to Washington, D.C., Prince George’s County is home to thousands of federal employees and contractors. In light of the current challenges facing the federal government, County officials are reaffirming their commitment to supporting local residents impacted by any disruptions.

Leadership in the County recognizes the critical role federal workers play in the region and is focused on maintaining residents' quality of life during this uncertain time. Efforts are underway to coordinate closely with state and federal partners to provide timely resources, services, and updates.

With a unified approach, Prince George’s County is working to ensure that families have the support they need, standing together as “One County United.”
