Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Prevention and Resources in Bowie

Each October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month shines a vital spotlight on prevention, early detection, and support for those affected by breast cancer. In Bowie local organizations and healthcare providers are actively engaged in promoting awareness and offering accessible resources to the community.
Early detection remains one of the most effective tools in combating breast cancer. Women over 40 are encouraged to schedule regular mammograms, which can detect cancer before symptoms appear. Residents can access screenings through providers like the Luminis Health Breast Center in Bowie.
Local events, such as the Walk by Faith Breast Cancer Walk for Life held annually at Allen Pond Park, not only raise funds but also foster a sense of solidarity among survivors, caregivers, and advocates. The next walk takes place this Saturday, October 11, 2025.
The Walk by Faith Breast Cancer Support Services organization also offers holistic support—including counseling, transportation assistance, and wellness resources—for patients and families navigating a diagnosis.
For those seeking ongoing community or emotional support, the Prince George’s County Health Department hosts monthly support groups and offers navigation services to guide patients through treatment options.
This month, Bowie stands united—raising awareness, supporting one another, and championing early detection in the fight against breast cancer.
Troop 1283 Celebrates 60 Years of Service, Leadership, and Adventure in Bowie

Boy Scout Troop 1283 has served the Bowie community since 1965 under the charter of Cresthill Church. Open to boys from 5th grade through age 18, Troop 1283 has welcomed over 650 members, regardless of race, creed, color, or schooling, fostering growth in character, citizenship, fitness, and leadership. Nearly 100 Scouts have achieved the Eagle Scout rank, completing impactful service projects benefiting Cresthill Church, the City of Bowie, and Prince George’s County.
Troop 1283 is known for its active outdoor program, with monthly outings to parks across Maryland and beyond, enduring all types of weather. The troop has a long tradition of summer camps, including trips to Goshen, Tuckahoe, Haliburton Scout Reserve in Canada, Acadia National Park in Maine, and special High Adventure treks to locations like Philmont Scout Ranch and Florida Sea Base.
Community service is a core value, including stream cleanups, food drives, and shelter assistance programs. Leadership development is emphasized through local and national training courses. Many Scouts return as adult leaders, some earning top recognitions such as the Wood Badge, District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver Award. Troop 1283 continues to inspire boys to become responsible, community-minded men over its 60-year legacy.
Current and former Scouts, leaders and friends of Troop 1283 are invited to celebrate with Boy Scout Troop 1283 this weekend, October 11, for their 60th Anniversary and Annual Fall Court of Honor.
County and State - Federal Government Shutdown Resources
As one of the closest jurisdictions to Washington, D.C., Prince George’s County is home to thousands of federal employees and contractors. In light of the current challenges facing the federal government, County officials are reaffirming their commitment to supporting local residents impacted by any disruptions.
Leadership in the County recognizes the critical role federal workers play in the region and is focused on maintaining residents' quality of life during this uncertain time. Efforts are underway to coordinate closely with state and federal partners to provide timely resources, services, and updates.
With a unified approach, Prince George’s County is working to ensure that families have the support they need, standing together as “One County United.”

This weekend, Prince George’s County is putting connection front and center. The Prince George’s County Police Department invites residents to take part in National Faith & Blue Weekend—a celebration of unity, trust, and shared purpose. Through community gatherings, conversations, and family-friendly events, the weekend offers a chance for law enforcement and locals to meet not as strangers, but as neighbors.
Whether you’re stopping by for a chat or staying for the festivities, you’ll find an open invitation to engage, ask questions, and build bridges. It’s more than just fun—it’s a step toward understanding.
Join in strengthening the bonds that make our communities safer and stronger, together. Because real change begins with real connection.
