Some of the agenda items for the September 2nd meeting include purchasing & procurement reforms, water & sewer rehabilitation status and funding and transportation priority list review.

Regular City Council meetings in Bowie are the city’s public engine room—where budgets, infrastructure fixes, transportation priorities, and public-safety decisions are debated in the open. They ensure transparency and accountability, give residents a microphone through public comment, and move key actions from idea to implementation (think procurement rules, road improvements, and water/sewer rehabilitation). By posting agendas, holding hearings, and voting in public, the Council turns community input into policy, keeps projects on schedule, and coordinates with county and state partners. In short, these meetings are where Bowie’s day-to-day quality of life and long-term future are actively shaped.

Drivers in Bowie take note: the city’s speed cameras are on the move. Starting October 2, 2025, the Bowie Police Department will rotate several camera locations as part of its ongoing Safe Speed Program. The initiative, aimed at promoting safer driving near schools and residential areas, regularly shifts cameras to areas with reported speeding concerns. While the department has not yet released the new locations, signs will be posted to alert drivers. City officials stress that the purpose is deterrence—not punishment. “This is about keeping our roads safe,” a department spokesperson said. Residents can view updates on the city’s official website. As always, citations will be issued to violators once the new cameras are live.

City of Bowie Launches Major Infrastructure Revamp on 5th Street

The City of Bowie has officially begun the design phase for a major infrastructure project aimed at revitalizing a key stretch of 5th Street. Running between Chestnut Avenue and Myrtle Avenue, the project is set to bring significant improvements to pedestrian accessibility, roadway conditions, and stormwater drainage.

City planners have outlined a comprehensive approach that will not only make 5th Street safer and more walkable but also tackle long-standing drainage concerns that have affected the area. In addition to the upgrades on 5th Street, nearby sections of 6th Street will also undergo drainage improvements to mitigate flooding and water runoff issues.

The project is still in its early stages, with design plans currently in development. Community engagement and input will play a role as the city moves forward with its plans to enhance infrastructure and improve quality of life for local residents.
