Faster Fixes, Safer Streets: Bowie Upgrades Lighting Infrastructure

Bowie is upgrading its streetlights with an underground conduit system, making repairs faster and avoiding street or driveway digging. This trenchless setup protects wires and allows quick cable replacement, cutting current repair times (up to 21 days). Some lights are city-owned, others by BG&E, with repairs done by contractors in order received. Residents should report issues—like outages or flickering—online or by calling Public Works. Include the pole number, your name, and contact info for updates. Some parts may require special orders, causing delays. The upgrade improves efficiency and reduces disruptions.

Sun-Powered Progress: Bowie Leads with Clean Energy

Bowie is tapping into the power of the sun to shape a greener future. Across the city, solar panels now crown municipal buildings—from the Senior Center and Kenhill Center to the Parks and Grounds facility—quietly converting sunlight into clean, renewable energy. It’s all part of Bowie’s ambitious strategy to cut emissions and lead by example in the fight against climate change.

At the heart of this initiative is “The Farm,” a massive 5-megawatt solar array on city-owned land. Through a power purchase agreement, this project significantly offsets the city’s electricity use while reducing its environmental footprint.

Smaller systems, like the 3.6 kW array on the Genealogy Library and the 8.82 kW setup at the Radio and T.V. Museum, round out a citywide effort that’s as practical as it is visionary. Bowie isn’t just going solar—it’s proving that even mid-sized cities can lead the way toward a more sustainable tomorrow.

On Saturday, August 30th, Bowie’s Prince George’s Stadium comes alive with history, hustle, and heart for the Negro League Legends Hall of Fame Annual Celebration. From 10:00am to 4:00pm., families and fans alike can catch the vintage East/West All‑Stars baseball game, with players donning authentic throwback uniforms to honor the legendary 1933 East–West Classic.

The day unfolds with unforgettable highlights: 5,000 complimentary tickets are available (first‑come, first‑served), along with player meet‑and‑greet chances, immersive historical exhibits, and a heartfelt on‑field tribute to Negro League icons.

Rolling into the east parking lot is the Annual Auto Showcase Benefit, revving up at 10 a.m. complete with vintage cars, trophies, and vibrant community vibes—all free and open to the public.

This free, family‑friendly celebration is more than a game—it’s a spirited tribute to baseball’s legacy, community pride, and the Black athletes who shaped the game we know today.
