Promoting Youth Expression Through MLK Art Contest

Credit: City of Bowie

The Bowie Insider was created to celebrate and share the many positive stories that make Bowie a vibrant and connected community. As part of this mission, we’re proud to spotlight the City of Bowie’s initiatives that uplift local youth and honor important legacies.

To celebrate the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the City of Bowie Diversity Committee is hosting its annual art contest for students in grades K–12. The 2025–2026 theme is "Empower the Dream: Creating Positive Change Together.ā€ This contest encourages students to reflect on Dr. King's impact and the ongoing journey toward social justice. Participants can now submit entries by December 5, 2025, in either performing or visual arts, offering a powerful platform for creative expression and civic engagement. It’s a meaningful opportunity for young artists to explore their voices and inspire change in their communities.

Back to School in Prince George’s County: Safety and Health Reminders

Prince George’s County Public Schools will welcome students back for the first day of classes on Tuesday, August 26. As buses roll out and crosswalks fill with children, drivers are urged to stay alert and follow key safety guidelines.

Here are five essential road safety tips:

  • Slow down in school zones.

  • Stop for school buses loading or unloading children.

  • Watch for pedestrians at crosswalks.

  • Avoid distracted driving, especially near schools.

  • Obey crossing guards and posted traffic signs.

In preparation for the school year, free mobile vaccine clinics will be available through September 27. These clinics, offered by Prince George’s County Public Schools in partnership with the County Health Department, serve K–12 students who are uninsured or underinsured. The goal is to ensure all students meet Maryland’s immunization requirements before the new academic year begins.
