Did you see these clouds in Bowie yesterday evening?

Yesterday evening, just beyond Route 50, close to Northview Drive, I saw these funnel clouds in the sky. Did you see them? I’m not a storm chaser but these funnel clouds in Bowie were a sight to see, just after I heard a weather alert warning on Magic 102.3.

I don’t know exactly what these clouds are and haven’t heard my favorite NBC 4 weathermen Chuck Bell or Doug Kammerer yet but a storm was building up in Bowie when I saw these clouds, just before the rain poured down.

They didn’t appear to be a tornado funnel. A tornado warnings mean a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar, and immediate action is necessary to stay safe. If a warning is issued, move quickly to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows. Avoid large open spaces like gymnasiums, and protect your head and neck with a sturdy object or your arms. If you’re outside and cannot get to shelter, lie flat in a low-lying area, covering your head. Do not stay in vehicles or attempt to outrun a tornado. Keep a battery-powered weather radio or your phone charged to receive updates. After the warning ends, stay informed in case of additional storms. Being prepared and responding quickly can save lives during severe weather events in our community.

Layered Swim Safety: Lifeguards, CPR Training, Open Water Tips in Bowie

With Bowie’s pools and nearby open water drawing families this summer, layered swim safety is vital. First, always swim near lifeguards at local community pools—such as those in Prince George’s County—where trained staff oversee safety protocols For residential pools, Prince George’s County law mandates a 6‑foot fence with self‑latching gate to restrict unsupervised access . Parents should adopt the buddy system and keep constant adult supervision, never relying solely on flotation devices.

Children and caregivers are strongly encouraged to take CPR training, available via Red Cross and local EMS. In open water—whether Allen Pond or regional beaches—use US Coast Guard life jackets, avoid swimming after rain, and heed posted signs about currents or contamination. Avoid alcohol, enforce no‑running zones, and keep pool decks clear of slip hazards.

By layering safeguards, Bowie families can enjoy water fun while minimizing risk. Stay safe and dive confidently!

Attending Bowie City Council meetings is one of the most direct ways residents can stay informed and shape decisions impacting their neighborhoods. These regular meetings, typically held on the first and third Mondays each month; they cover key issues from public safety to local development projects. By attending, residents can hear updates, learn about upcoming initiatives, and provide feedback that helps guide council decisions. Agendas are posted on the city’s website by the Friday before each meeting, allowing residents to review topics in advance and prepare questions or comments. Participating in these meetings is a simple but powerful way to ensure your voice is heard while staying connected to what’s happening across Bowie.
