Staying Cool in Bowie: How to Beat the Summer Heat

Bowie, Maryland is already feeling the heat this summer. Over the past week, high temperatures have reached up to 97°F, with “feels like” conditions climbing past 105°F due to humidity. The forecasted average high for summer 2025 sits around 94°F, making heat safety more important than ever.

To stay cool, drink water frequently—even if you’re not thirsty—and avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours, typically between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Dress in loose, breathable fabrics and use fans along with closed curtains to keep indoor spaces comfortable. A cool shower can also help regulate body temperature.

For your car, which can easily reach 140°F when parked in direct sun, try using reflective windshield shades and cracking windows slightly to allow ventilation. Cover the steering wheel with a towel, and consider tinted windows or a solar-powered fan for added cooling. Always check the back seat before exiting—never leave children or pets in the car and check on our older neighbors to ensure that they are keeping cool.

Know the signs of heat-related illness and the ways to respond to it.

Don't Toss It—Recycle It! Bowie Electronics Event June 28

Recycling electronics is more than a responsible choice—it’s essential for protecting our environment and conserving resources. Electronic waste, or e-waste, often contains toxic materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can harm ecosystems if dumped in landfills. Recycling recovers valuable components like gold, copper, and rare earth metals, reducing the need for mining and conserving energy.

Bowie residents have a perfect opportunity to make a positive impact at the Bowie Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, June 28, from 8:00am - 2:00pm at the Public Works Yard, 16500 Annapolis Road. This free event helps ensure your old devices are safely and sustainably handled.

From laptops and cell phones to TVs and kitchen appliances, bring your unused electronics and help keep Bowie—and the planet—clean, green, and future-focused.

Support Local Entrepreneurs at the New Retail Incubator at Bowie Town Center

A new retail incubator has officially opened its doors in Bowie Town Center at 15402B Emerald Way Bowie, offering a unique platform for early-stage businesses and small manufacturers from across Maryland to showcase and sell their products.

Launched by the Maryland Women’s Business Center (MWBC), the initiative—called MWBC Shop Local Bowie—aims to bolster local entrepreneurship by combining retail opportunities with business development training. The space brings together 12 small business owners and artisans in a shared marketplace featuring handmade and locally produced items such as clothing, jewelry, skincare products, toys, coffee, and tea.

Beyond retail, the incubator includes a communal area designed for workshops, classes, and neighborhood gatherings, reinforcing its mission to be both a commercial and community hub.

This new venture is made possible through support from the U.S. Small Business Administration and the City of Bowie.
