Quote of the Day

“Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams. The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” ~ Ashley Smith, Novelist

Prince George’s County voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, to fill two key vacancies: County Executive and County Council District 5. The special election follows Angela Alsobrooks’ December resignation after her election to the U.S. Senate. Tara Jackson has served as acting executive since.

Democrat Aisha Braveboy, the county’s State’s Attorney, faces Republican Jonathan White, a U.S. Air Force veteran, in the race for County Executive. Braveboy, endorsed by Governor Wes Moore, emphasizes crime reduction and fiscal accountability. White highlights his military and public safety background.

In District 5, Democrat Shayla Adams-Stafford, an education advocate and former school board member, competes against Republican Fred Price Jr. The seat was vacated when Jolene Ivey won an at-large council position.

Early voting runs from May 28 to June 2, with Election Day voting on June 3 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by June 3. For voting locations and ballot drop box sites, visit elections.maryland.gov.

Memorial Day Parade 2025

The Origins of Memorial Day: Honoring the Fallen from the Beginning

Memorial Day, now a cherished national tradition in the United States, began as a solemn response to the immense loss of life during the Civil War. Its earliest incarnation can be traced back to May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, where formerly enslaved people, together with Union soldiers and missionaries, organized a ceremony to honor Union troops buried in a mass grave at a former Confederate prison camp. They reinterred the bodies, decorated the graves with flowers, and held a parade—a powerful act of remembrance and reclaiming of dignity.

The more formalized observance began in 1868 when General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic called for a nationwide day of remembrance on May 30. Known as "Decoration Day," it invited Americans to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.

Over time, Memorial Day evolved to honor all Americans who died in military service, officially becoming a federal holiday in 1971 and moving to the last Monday in May.

Thank you to all how served and currently serve in the armed forces.

Bowie Shifts Speed Cameras to New Locations Starting June 2

Image Credit: City of Bowie Police Department

The City of Bowie is adjusting the placement of its automated speed enforcement cameras to enhance traffic safety in key areas. Beginning Monday, June 2, three cameras currently stationed on Old Stage Road, Brunswick Lane, and Dolphin Way will be moved to new locations as part of the Safe Speed Camera Program.

The new monitoring points will be on eastbound Northview Drive, eastbound Millstream Drive, and northbound Mitchellville Road. These roads have been identified as needing increased speed enforcement based on traffic patterns and safety concerns.

The initiative aims to reduce speeding and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians in neighborhoods and school zones. The speed camera program continues to rotate enforcement locations periodically to ensure citywide coverage and effectiveness.
