The City of Bowie invites residents and visitors to experience the powerful return of the fifth annual Field of Honor®, a moving tribute set to transform Sussex Lane Park into a sea of American flags from May 16 through June 11, 2025. Located across from Bowie High School, the display of 150 U.S. flags will create a striking and emotional landscape, each flag symbolizing a story of courage, service, or remembrance.

This inspiring event honors those who serve and protect—military members, veterans, first responders, medical professionals, and those lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each flag can be sponsored and dedicated to a loved one, a profession, or a group that has made a difference. Accompanied by personalized dedication cards, these flags serve as lasting tributes to the everyday heroes among us.

The display is free and open to the public, offering a chance for reflection and gratitude. An opening ceremony will be held on Friday, May 16 at 7:00pm, inviting the community to come together in unity and remembrance.

Supported by donations, sponsorships, and the hard work of volunteers, the Field of Honor is a heartfelt gift to the city—reminding us of our shared strength, resilience, and hope for a better tomorrow.

Celebrate Our Educators During Teachers Appreciation Week in Bowie

This Teacher Appreciation Week, we extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated educators and administrators across Bowie, Maryland. Your tireless commitment, creativity, and compassion have shaped not just classrooms, but futures. Whether guiding kindergartners through their first words or preparing high school seniors for life beyond graduation, your impact is immeasurable.

Let’s take this week to say thank you. Write a heartfelt note, donate classroom supplies, or simply share a kind word with a teacher or staff member. Local businesses can offer educator discounts or sponsor lunch deliveries. Parents and students can team up to create thank-you banners or small gift baskets.

To every Bowie educator: your work matters. Your patience and passion make our community stronger, smarter, and kinder. From all of us at The Bowie Insider, thank you for all you do—this week and every week. We see you. We appreciate you.

Every day is a good day to show appreciation for our educators!

End of an Era: Six Flags Bowie to Close After 25 Years

Six Flags America, a beloved amusement park in Bowie is set to permanently close on November 2, 2025, after more than 25 years of thrills, family fun, and community memories. The decision comes as part of a strategic review following a merger between Six Flags Entertainment and Cedar Fair. The nearly 500-acre property—including Hurricane Harbor water park—will be sold and marketed for redevelopment.

Originally opened in 1974 as the Largo Wildlife Preserve and rebranded as Six Flags America in 1999, the park has been a regional entertainment staple. Its closure will impact around 70 full-time employees, who are expected to receive severance and support. Season pass holders can continue visiting through the park’s final day.

Local leaders, while saddened by the loss, are optimistic about future redevelopment opportunities. As Bowie faces the end of an era, the community prepares to say goodbye to one of its most iconic attractions.
