“I’ve found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more often.” ~ Brian Tracy

Safer Streets: Bowie’s Traffic Enforcement

The Bowie Police Department ramped up its traffic enforcement to help make Bowie streets safer. The Bowie Police reported that traffic contacts/stops increased by 25% compared to last year and warnings issued increased by 30% compared to this time last year. The year-over-year rise highlights the department’s proactive approach to improving road safety. Efforts included enhanced patrols, increased use of mobile speed cameras, and the strategic placement of enforcement zones in high-violation areas.
Officers also emphasized community engagement, distributing educational materials on safe driving habits and the consequences of traffic violations. The increase in citations reflects both greater enforcement and a continued commitment to protecting drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. As 2025 progresses, Bowie police plan to maintain their focus on deterrence, education, and enforcement, aiming to make city streets safer for everyone who uses them.
Watch the Replay of the Bowie Budget City Council Meeting - Monday, April 14
On April 14, 2025, the Bowie City Council convened a special meeting to introduce the proposed Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Ordinance and Capital Improvements Program (CIP) Resolution. The session marked the commencement of the city's budget review process. During the meeting, the Council conducted Budget Worksession #1, focusing on General Fund revenues, the Capital Improvements Program, and the Capital Projects Fund. This initial discussion set the stage for subsequent budget deliberations, with additional worksessions scheduled through May to examine departmental budgets and finalize fiscal plans. Residents are encouraged to participate in the process by attending upcoming sessions and public hearings.
Bowie Taxes 101: What Every Resident Should Know
In Bowie taxes are a vital part of how the city funds services like public safety, road maintenance, parks, and community programs. Property taxes make up the largest share of the city's revenue, and rates are set annually by the City Council as part of the budget process. While Bowie residents also pay state and county taxes, only the city's portion directly supports local services. The tax year runs from July 1 through June 30. Residents receive their tax bills from Prince George’s County, which collects the payments on the city’s behalf. Homeowners can appeal their property assessments if they believe their valuation is inaccurate. Bowie also offers tax relief programs for seniors and residents with limited income. Transparency is a priority, with budget hearings open to the public and documents readily available online.
Save the Date for Bowie Community Matters
The next Community Matters will be April 30th at South Bowie Library, 15301 Hall Rd in Meeting Room #209 on the second floor.

Bulldogs Bring the Heat: Bowie High’s Baseball Stars Shine

The Bowie High School Bulldogs varsity baseball team is charging through the 2025 season with an outstanding 10-1 overall record and a perfect 9-0 in regional play. After an early loss to Queen Anne’s County, the Bulldogs have roared back with a dominant winning streak. Highlights include a blowout 19-0 win over Laurel and a strong 12-2 showing against Eastern High School. Senior pitcher Taylor Brown has been lights out, holding a perfect 0.00 ERA, while junior standout B. Epps Jr. leads the offense with a .400 batting average and a .556 on-base percentage. The Bulldogs now sit at the top of their division and are poised for a serious run at the MPSSAA Class 4A State Championship in May. With talent, teamwork, and momentum on their side, Bowie baseball is delivering a season to remember.
