A Fresh New Look for Bowie’s Landscape

Big changes are happening at MD 197 & Kenhill Drive, and Bowie is getting a fresh, new look! The aging shrubbery that once spelled out "Bowie" is being replaced with a modern, vibrant hardscape design that will enhance the area’s beauty and durability.

But that’s not all! The redesign also includes native grasses and Maryland’s state flower, the Black-eyed Susan, bringing a burst of color and life to the space. These native plants will not only look great but also support local pollinators and require less maintenance.

Work is already underway, so get ready to see this corner of Bowie transformed into a welcoming, eye-catching landmark. Stay tuned.

Meet the Man Behind the Badge: Chief Dwayne Preston Brings Heart and Hometown Pride to Bowie

Bowie Police Chief Dwayne Preston is more than a law enforcement leader—he’s a hometown man of faith; grounded in service, humility, and heart. Raised in nearby Largo/Kettering, Preston carries the pride and perseverance of Prince George’s County into everything he does.

An unwavering Washington sports fan, he roots loudly for the Washington Commanders, Wizards, Nationals, and Capitals. His loyalty to local teams mirrors the steadfast commitment he brings to protecting and serving the Bowie community.

Music and reflection also play a role in his daily life. If he had to pick one artist to listen to forever, gospel great CeCe Winans would top his playlist. Her uplifting music brings him peace and grounding. One book that’s deeply influenced him is “I Came As a Shadow”, the autobiography of iconic Georgetown coach John Thompson—a figure who, like Preston, believes in purpose over prestige.

When the uniform comes off, Chief Preston finds joy in life’s simple comforts. He says, adding a slice of his wife's 7-Up pound cake is his perfect way to end a long day. For a night out, his top recommendation is Jerry’s Seafood, a Bowie restaurant known for its legendary crab bomb.

Asked who he’d love to share a meal with, Chief Preston chooses former President Barack Obama and actor Denzel Washington—two barrier-breaking leaders whose stories of resilience inspire him.

His favorite quote sums up his philosophy: “The measure of greatness is not position, power or prestige; it is service.”

In Chief Dwayne Preston, Bowie has more than a police chief—it has a compassionate leader who serves with pride, listens with empathy, and leads with heart.
