History in your Backyard Series: Recovering African American Burial Grounds at Sacred Heart

A chapter of Bowie’s history is being uncovered through the History in Your Backyard series, with a special focus on the African American burial grounds at Sacred Heart. This initiative sheds light on the unmarked and often forgotten resting places of enslaved and freed African Americans who lived and worked on the Jesuit plantation that once stood on these grounds.

Historians and archaeologists are using advanced technology and historical records to locate graves and piece together the stories of those buried there. The project is part of a broader effort to honor and preserve African American heritage in the region.

Community members are invited to learn more about these sacred sites, their historical significance, and ongoing efforts to document and protect them. By reclaiming this history, Bowie is ensuring that the voices of the past are heard and remembered for generations to come.
