Daylight Saving Time Begins! Here’s Why It’s Worth the Change & 5 Tips for Adjusting

As winter fades in Bowie and signs of spring emerge we welcome the changing seasons; good-bye winter! Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins on Sunday, March 10, at 2:00am, when we move our clocks one hour. While we lose an hour of sleep, we gain something even greater—longer daylight hours that bring a renewed sense of energy and possibility.

The benefits of DST go beyond just extra sunshine. Extended daylight gives us more time outdoors for activities, supports physical and mental well-being, and can even help reduce energy consumption by decreasing the need for artificial lighting in the evening. Studies suggest that more daylight hours contribute to safer roads, as visibility improves for drivers and pedestrians alike. Additionally, businesses often see increased activity as people take advantage of the brighter evenings.

5 Tips for Adjusting to Daylight Saving Time

  1. Gradually Adjust Your Sleep Schedule – A few days before the time change, go to bed and wake up 15-30 minutes earlier to help your body adapt smoothly.

  2. Soak Up Natural Light – Spend time outdoors in the morning to help regulate your internal clock and feel more alert during the day.

  3. Limit Evening Screen Time – Reduce exposure to screens before bed, as blue light can interfere with melatonin production and make it harder to fall asleep.

  4. Stick to a Healthy Routine – Eat nutritious meals, stay hydrated, and avoid caffeine or heavy meals too close to bedtime to promote restful sleep.

  5. Be Patient with Yourself – It can take a few days to fully adjust, so listen to your body, take short naps if needed, and embrace the longer, brighter days ahead!
