Building Community: Bowie’s “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” Program

In Bowie, Maryland, community is more than just a word—it’s a way of life. Through the “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program, residents are bridging the gap between older or disabled neighbors who need assistance and those who are ready to lend a helping hand. Managed by the city’s Community Services Department, this volunteer-driven initiative pairs residents aged 65 and older with willing volunteers who can make their lives a little easier.

From shoveling snow and raking leaves to picking up groceries and medications, volunteers step in to support their neighbors with essential tasks, allowing older residents to continue living independently and safely in their homes. Bowie’s program welcomes everyone—from active retirees to high school students and civic groups—who are looking for a meaningful way to give back. For those seeking assistance or wishing to volunteer, applications are available on the city’s website, connecting Bowie's residents in a true spirit of neighborly care.

Empowering Survivors: Meet Alicia Stukes of I’m Bruised But Not Broken

"I’m Bruised But Not Broken," founded by CEO Alicia Stukes, is a 501c(3) organization dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence and empowering individuals to rebuild their lives. Driven by her own experiences and a deep commitment to helping others, Alicia created this organization to serve as a guiding light of hope and healing for those who have faced the pain of abuse. Through workshops, counseling, and outreach programs, "I’m Bruised But Not Broken" (IBBNB) offers survivors not only resources but also a community that understands and uplifts them.

Alicia’s leadership and vision shine through the organization’s work, reminding survivors that their past does not define them. She leads with empathy and dedication to create a safe, supportive environment for individuals to reclaim their strength and confidence. The organization’s mission is not only to raise awareness about domestic violence but also to inspire resilience, fostering a world where survivors are empowered to thrive and find renewed purpose.

To continue its vital work, IBBNB relies on the support of the community. There are many ways to get involved—whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word about the organization’s mission. By supporting this cause, you help provide essential resources and hope to survivors on their journey to healing and empowerment.
