Quote of the Day
"In November, the smell of food is different. It is an orange smell. A squash and pumpkin smell. It tastes like cinnamon and can fill up a house in the morning, can pull everyone from bed in a fog." — Cynthia Rylant

Controversial Book Bans in Prince George’s Schools: What You Need to Know

In Prince George’s County, the issue of book bans in schools has sparked considerable discussion among educators, parents, and community leaders. Recently, over 30 books have been banned from school libraries and curriculums, primarily due to concerns over content deemed inappropriate for certain age groups. The majority of these books address complex topics such as racial injustice, LGBTQ+ identities, mental health, and other social issues that some argue are unsuitable for younger students.
Some books on the banned list includes prominent titles such as The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, which explores themes of police violence and racism, Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe, a memoir detailing gender identity and self-discovery, All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson, a collection of personal essays on growing up Black and queer, Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Pérez, which delves into historical racial violence, and Beloved by Toni Morrison, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel centered on the traumas of slavery. These bans highlight the ongoing debate over educational content, free speech, and the role of parental input in school curricula.
In Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed the "Freedom to Read" act which ends book bans within Maryland library systems that receive money from the state
Celebrate World Kindness Day Today: 5 Ways to Spread Joy in Bowie

World Kindness Day, celebrated today November 13, is all about spreading positivity and goodwill through simple, thoughtful acts. It’s a global day dedicated to fostering kindness in our communities and creating a ripple effect of compassion. For Bowie, Maryland residents, there are many ways to make a difference! Here are five ideas to celebrate:
1. Pay It Forward: Surprise someone in line by covering their coffee or meal.
2. Leave Positive Notes: Write encouraging messages and place them on community boards or at bus stops.
3. Clean Up a Park: Gather friends or family to pick up litter at a local park.
4. Volunteer Locally: Spend a few hours helping at a Bowie food pantry or animal shelter.
5. Connect with Neighbors: Drop off baked goods or flowers to bring a smile to someone’s day.
