Engineering Review and Permitting Services Offered by Public Works
The Public Works Department handles engineering reviews and permits for various activities within public rights-of-way, including projects involving Bowie water or sewer utilities, stormwater management (SWM), and sediment control measures for construction sites.
Common projects requiring review or permitting include:
- Development projects extending public streets or storm drains
- Utility work within City rights-of-way, such as repairs, extensions, or new connections
- Installation of poles or attachments for wireless or cellular communications
- Driveway entrance repairs, modifications, or new installations
- Projects discharging drainage onto City streets or into storm drains
- SWM designs for developments disturbing 5,000 square feet or more
- Construction needing sediment control permits (5,000 square feet of disturbance)
- Connections or extensions to City water or sewer utilities
Guidance documents, checklists, and other resources are available to help developers navigate the permitting process.

Video: The Cast of ‘A Different World” sitcom on tour at Bowie State University
The cast of the iconic TV show A Different World recently visited Bowie State University as part of their nationwide tour celebrating the series’ cultural impact. The beloved sitcom, which aired from 1987 to 1993, was set at the fictional Hillman College and explored the lives of students at a historically Black college. Cast members including Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne) and Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert) engaged with students, shared behind-the-scenes stories, and discussed the importance of HBCUs in shaping African-American culture.
The tour aims to inspire current college students by highlighting the show's themes of education, identity, and activism. At Bowie State, one of the nation's oldest HBCUs, the visit included panel discussions and interactive Q&A sessions, giving students a chance to connect with the stars of this groundbreaking show.
