Odenton and Bowie State Lead Maryland’s New Housing and Transit Development

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Maryland Economic Development Corp. have unveiled a plan to promote transit-oriented development (TOD) along the Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Penn Line, focusing on six key stations between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. This initiative aims to create 2,600 new housing units, boost public transit use, and ease traffic congestion. The development will center on 170 acres of state-owned land, with the Odenton and Bowie State University stations being the first priorities.

At Odenton, the plan calls for 900 new housing units, creating over 1,300 jobs and generating $270 million in tax revenue. Bowie State University’s station is set for campus expansion and 400 new housing units. Overall, the plan is expected to generate $1.7 billion in retail sales and $800 million in tax revenues over 30 years, while also adding more than 500,000 MARC trips annually.

The TOD plan supports increased MARC ridership, enabling future service expansions to Delaware and Virginia, all while addressing the state’s housing shortage.

Bowie’s Annual Fair Housing Symposium: A Free Event for Housing Awareness

Each April, during National Fair Housing Month, the City of Bowie hosts a free Fair Housing Symposium aimed at educating the public about housing protections and rights. This event is beneficial for a variety of professionals, including code enforcement and law enforcement officers, city and county employees, realtors, property managers, and homeowner associations. It's also valuable for anyone interested in learning more about fair housing laws, particularly those affecting veterans, people with disabilities, and families.

As a designated Entitlement Community under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Bowie is committed to affirmatively furthering fair housing. The Office of Grants Development & Administration (OGDA) leads the city’s fair housing efforts, overseeing education, outreach, and the intake of fair housing complaints. The city actively analyzes barriers to fair housing and works to eliminate them while keeping thorough records of its actions.

Bowie High and Bowie State Homecoming Games Set for October 19 – Expect Traffic

Get ready, Bowie! Homecoming weekend is almost here, and that means lots of excitement—and a little extra traffic. Both Bowie High School and Bowie State University are celebrating their homecomings on Saturday, October 29, with football games kicking off at 1:00 PM. Fans, families, and alumni will be flocking to the stadiums, so if you’re planning to be out and about, expect some traffic delays around the schools and surrounding areas.

If you’re heading to one of the games, be sure to arrive early to grab a parking spot and avoid the rush. For those just passing through, it might be a good idea to take alternate routes to steer clear of game day traffic. Get ready for a festive weekend, and go Bulldogs and Bulldogs—yes, both teams share the same mascot!
