Stay Proactive! Key Tips for Breast Cancer Prevention This October

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness, supporting those affected, and promoting early detection. The goal is to educate the public about the importance of early screening, prevention, and understanding risk factors. Here are five key tips for maintaining breast health and reducing the risk of breast cancer:
1. Get Regular Screenings: Women aged 40 and older should have mammograms every 1-2 years, or earlier if they have a higher risk. Early detection significantly improves outcomes.
2. Know Your Family History: If breast cancer runs in your family, discuss your risk factors with your healthcare provider to create a personalized screening plan.
3. Perform Monthly Self-Exams: Regularly check for unusual lumps, changes, or discomfort.
4. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
5. Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest research and breast health guidelines to stay proactive.
These steps can help reduce risks and promote early intervention, making a meaningful impact on breast health.
Prince George’s Goes Pink: Free Screenings & Events All Month Long

Prince George's Goes Pink (PGGP) is a month-long series of events and activities dedicated to raising awareness about breast and prostate cancer throughout Prince George’s County. The initiative aims to educate the community, promote early detection, and provide essential health resources. Most events are free and open to the public, featuring a variety of activities such as health workshops, free cancer screenings, and educational seminars. Participants can also enjoy prizes and giveaways at select events.
Space is limited for all activities, so it's important to sign up early to secure your spot. Proceeds from ticketed events will support two local non-profits: The Edith P. Wright Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., which provides support for breast cancer survivors, and Fight Through Flights, Inc., which empowers women of color through wellness travel experiences.
Bowie’s Trash Services Return Back to Starting at 7:00 AM
The City of Bowie has announced that starting Monday, its trash, recycling, yard waste, and special pickups will return to a 7:00am start time. This adjustment comes as cooler fall temperatures settle in, allowing sanitation crews to work more comfortably during daylight hours. Residents are reminded to have their items placed curbside by 7:00am to ensure timely collection. The city had previously moved to earlier start times during the summer months to combat extreme heat and ensure worker safety. Bowie’s Public Works Department appreciates the community’s cooperation and recommends setting out materials the night before to avoid any missed pickups.
